The Ancient Trade of Stone Masonry
Stone Masonry dates back to the beginning of civilisation and was one of the earliest of trades. Ancient civilisations would have heavily relied on a skilled stone mason to construct their long lasting monuments, some of which are still around today for us to see.
Using a wide variety of tools to shape stone blocks and slabs into finished products. Some of these stones will be the rarest of materials that will be found in the most remote mountains in Italy and other places alike.
The most used tools for a stone mason are a chisel, a mallet and a straight edge. With most trades now turning to the more automated tools and manual work is becoming a thing of the past but masonry continues to use manual tools to construct their finished articles.
Recently we were commissioned to build a website for Madstone Ltd and was delighted to be able to work with them and see a little more into how this ancient trade that has not really changed is still going. Madstone Ltd are a family run business.
